LABEL GUIDELINES -
Nutritional Content Claims

 
 
   
     
 

The FDA has provided guidelines for claims and descriptions manufacturers may use on food labeling. Based on one serving, they include:

Calories

  Free — less than 5 calories
  Low — 40 calories or less
  Reduced / Less — 25% less than normal
  Light (Lite) — 1/3 fewer calories

Fat

  Free — less than 0.5g fat
  Low — 40 calories or less
  Reduced / Less — 25% less than normal
  Light (Lite) — 50% less than normal

Saturated Fat

  Free — less than 0.5g saturated fat and less than 0.5g trans fatty acids
  Low — 3g or less fat
  Reduced / Less — 25% less than normal
  Light (Lite) — 50% less than normal

Cholesterol

  Free — less than 2mg cholesterol and 2g or less saturated fat
  Low — less than 20mg cholesterol and 2g or less saturated fat
  Reduced / Less — 25% less than normal
  Light (Lite) — 50% less than normal

Sugar

  Free — less than 0.5g sugar
  Reduced / Less — 25% less than normal
  Light (Lite) — 50% less than normal

Sodium

  Free — less than 5mg sodium
  Very Low — less than 35mg sodium
  Low — less than 140mg sodium
  Unsalted / No Salt Added — no salt added to normally salted food

 

NOTE: Low fat and nonfat does not mean low sodium or low sugar; manufacturers often replace the fat with added salt and sugar.
